Newton’s Essential, Original, and Waterproof Mattresses are all firm, breathable, and washable mattress options that can fit a standard crib. However, there are key differences between them.

The Essential Mattress is thinner than the Original and Waterproof options and has a single-layer white washable cover. It is suitable for newborns to three-year-olds.

The Original Mattress is 5.5 inches thick and features a soft, quilted, double-layer removable cover that comes in white, gray, pink, and blue. It’s suitable for newborns to four-year-olds.

The Waterproof Mattress is just like the Original, except the cover is waterproof. It’s 5.5 inches thick with a quilted double-layer waterproof cover. This mattress comes in white and grey and is suitable for newborns to four-year-olds.

You can use a standard Newton crib mattress from birth into toddlerhood. The Original and Waterproof Mattresses accommodate newborns to four-year-olds, whereas the Essential Mattress accommodates children up to three years old.

Wovenaire® is the proprietary cushioning material at the core of all Newton mattresses. We use it instead of foam, latex, or springs. It’s 90% air by volume and is made of a safe, food-grade polymer (the same material as a yogurt container).

The enhanced breathability from Wovenaire® makes our mattresses even safer for babies. For instance, if a baby accidentally flips over onto their stomach in the crib, there’s a reduced risk of suffocation.

Newton mattresses are made of three main components: The core, outer cover, and inner cover. Here are the specific materials used to make each:

The core is made of Wovenaire®, which is 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer.

The breathe-through outer cover of the mattress is made out of polyester.

The inner cover of the mattress is made of viscose, a safe alternative for exceeding rigorous federal flammability standards.

Our Waterproof Mattress also features a waterproof TPU barrier on the toddler side, especially important during potty training.

Newton mattresses are easy to clean inside and out! Here’s how you do it:

Mattress Cover: Unzip and remove the cover, and then re-zip it closed before washing. Machine wash cold using a delicate cycle, then tumble dry on low. Avoid bleach.

Encasement (Inner Cover): Only wash the encasement if it’s soiled. Hand-wash or spot clean using cool water, then tumble dry on low. Do not bleach or hang dry.

Inner Core: Use soap and cool water to wash the inner core of the mattress. You can either do this in the shower or outdoors with a hose. Shake excess water out of the mattress core, and stand it up to dry in a well-ventilated area not in direct sunlight.
