TIP: The inner cover (encasement) is made with a Viscose material, which may develop an odor if it remains damp (like a wool sweater). To refresh, add baking soda while handwashing.

Do I need to add anything to my Newton mattress?

Your Newton mattress consists of the Wovenaire® core material covered by a viscose inner cover (encasement) and a dual-layer removable outer cover. While your Newton mattress is the perfect sleep surface for your baby, you may consider adding some other items to create the ultimate sleep environment (and have backups in the linen closet).

  • Chances are you'll want to purchase an Extra Cover. Fully removable, machine washable and interchangeable, our Extra Covers are lifesavers for parents who prefer to have one ready when late-night accidents occur.
  • Our Waterproof Mattress Pad is a safe, breathable option to traditional waterproof pads. A breathable mattress is essential for your child’s safety and comfort. The extra air circulation helps to regulate your baby’s body temperature so they don’t overheat. That means a better sleep overall!

Having this additional airflow can help reduce the risk of suffocation. Practically speaking, if your baby were to turn over in the night, they’d be able to breathe right through the mattress.

Finally, the increased airflow discourages bacteria growth, allergens, and dust mites, which makes for a healthier sleeping environment for your child.

While the Newton Crib Mattress is not organic, it is a safer crib mattress for baby. Most "organic" baby crib mattresses feature only one organic component, such as cotton fabric or stuffing, but they aren't fully organic. Newton offers a mattress that is not only completely breathable to reduce suffocation risk but also offers the only washable crib mattress, making it the most hygienic sleep surface for your baby. Before you choose your crib mattress, you want to pick out your crib because the mattress needs to fit the crib perfectly. If your crib is a unique size or shape, then look to the crib manufacturer for a mattress that will fit.

If your crib is standard-sized, you have your choice of the many standard-sized mattresses on the market. Just make sure that whatever mattress you choose is firm and breathable.

There are many types of crib mattresses, differing by their core material and features. For instance, a crib mattress's core can be made of foam, latex, innersprings, or a hybrid of materials.

Foam mattresses are made of high-density polyurethane foam and tend to be very lightweight, whereas innerspring mattresses are heavier and feature steel coils covered by padding. The more coils a mattress has, the more supportive it tends to be.

Hybrid mattresses are made from multiple materials like coconut coir and wool, coil and foam, or even air and food-grade polymer. Some crib mattresses are made from natural latex as well. These offer firm support and are eco-friendly.

As for features, crib mattresses can be breathable, washable, and even dual-sided. They can also be organic or GREENGUARD Gold Certified with low or no chemical flame retardants or VOCs.

Crib mattresses must meet the strict safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), including measuring a minimum of 27 ¼” x 51 ⅝” for standard size cribs, passing firmness tests to prevent suffocation hazards, and passing fit tests to prevent entrapment.

When placed in the crib, a crib mattress should not leave a gap of more than two fingers between the mattress and the sides. It should also be well constructed, with no loose threads, broken coils, or sagging.

Lastly, crib mattresses must be free of hazardous materials such as PBDEs, mercury, lead, and phthalates.

Yes. Crib mattresses can be used for both babies and toddlers as long as the child is still sleeping in a crib or toddler bed.

Some are dual-sided crib mattresses, meaning they feature a firmer side for babies and a softer side for toddlers. Others, like Newton crib mattresses, are idea for all stages and don’t need to be flipped for comfort.

Whatever you choose, make sure that the mattress hasn’t had too much wear and tear, and is not sagging or worn.

Standard crib mattress sizes are regulated to meet a minimum sizing of 27 1/4" x 51 5/8" and not thicker than 6 inches. Standard crib sizes, while also regulated, can vary a bit based on construction. If a crib is labeled as a standard crib, Newton Crib Mattresses will fit nice and snugly inside.

At 52” x 28” x 5.5”, the Newton Original Crib Mattress will fit any standard crib. Some of our favorite cribs that it fits include our Newton Galileo Convertible Crib and Newton Nest Convertible Crib.

The Galileo is a 3-in-1 crib with modern lines, crafted with premium, sustainably sourced beech wood from France. It can be configured as a crib, toddler bed (with the included toddler bed conversion kit), and junior bed.
