Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What items do I need for my baby’s nursery?

The centerpiece for your baby’s nursery is where they will sleep: in either a bassinet or a crib. A bassinet is designed for babies only up to four months old. Once they've reached 20 pounds or can roll over, they need a bigger sleeping space.

A crib, on the other hand, will last your baby much longer.

Of course, another must-have is a mattress for your bassinet or crib. Safety needs to be a priority here. All Newton mattresses are ultra-breathable, comfortable, and washable. It’s also a good idea to get a mattress pad and cover for your mattress, too.

Other important items include a dresser, a changing table, and a glider for those middle-of-the-night feedings.

What is a convertible crib?

A convertible crib transforms into a toddler bed, daybed, and sometimes even a full-sized bed. Convertible cribs are a favorite with parents because they’re cost-effective. When your baby grows out of one stage, you can easily reassemble the crib into another.

Newton’s convertible cribs are made from durable, high-quality, and sustainably sourced beechwood, and they exceed U.S. standards with non-toxic finishes.

What are the differences between Newton’s various cribs?

First, let’s talk about how Newton’s cribs are similar. They all prioritize safety, sustainability, and durability. All of them have an aesthetically pleasing modern design that works well with any nursery room style and decor.

Most of Newton’s cribs are 3-in-1 convertible, meaning they can transition from a crib to a toddler bed, with or without a rail (like the Liberty Convertible Crib). The Sprout Convertible Crib is a 4-in-1 convertible and has the extra capacity to turn into a full-sized bed.

Additionally, Newton offers mini cribs. The differences between a crib and a mini-crib are what you would expect: their size. Mini cribs can't transform into toddler or day beds, either. They're more portable than cribs, so they're a great choice if you’ll be moving your baby’s crib often.

How do I wash my Newton mattress?

Washing the cover of your Newton mattress is as simple as unzipping it, removing it from the core, zipping it back up, and washing it on cold in your washing machine. When it’s clean, you can dry it in your dryer on the low setting.

After removing the mattress cover, you can wash the core by placing it in the shower and using soap and cool water to clean it. Alternatively, you can take it outside and rinse it with a hose. Either way, be sure to let it air dry completely before putting it back inside the cover.

Do I need to put sheets on a Newton mattress?

You don’t have to use sheets with your Newton mattress because it's ultra-breathable, soft, and comfortable for your baby to sleep on. But sheets can make cleaning your baby’s sleep surface easier. You just pull them off and wash them!

If you do decide to use sheets, Newton’s ultra-breathable, 100% cotton muslin sheets are a great option. The open-weave design of these lightweight, hypoallergenic sheets creates an optimal airflow for your baby. They fit both standard mattresses and mini-cribs.

What if I can’t fit a dresser and a changing table in my baby’s nursery because space is limited?

Convenience is so important when you’re taking care of a baby, especially when you’re doing it in the middle of the night! If you need to choose between a changing table and a dresser, you might want to consider getting a Newton Changer Dresser.

This is a combined dresser and changing table featuring a removable changing “tray” that sits securely on top. It allows you to keep diapers, wipes, creams, and pajamas within easy reach when you’re changing your baby.

Once your little one is potty-trained and doesn't need a changing table anymore, simply remove the top changing piece. Then continue using the dresser to store your child’s clothes, toys, or books. You can keep it for years to come!

Why should I consider putting a rocking chair from Newton in my baby’s nursery?

Rocking chairs can be very helpful for getting your baby drowsy before bedtime, helping them back to sleep after a nighttime feeding, and creating a sense of relaxation at any point in the day. Research shows that rhythmic motion can promote soothing and better sleep, making it a comforting addition to your nursery routine.

Both Newton’s glider and recliner provide all of this for your baby while supporting your head and neck with a comfortable pillow back. So your stress hormones decrease, too!
