It usually starts as a standard crib with four fixed sides, keeping your baby safe and secure, and then when they outgrow it, you can easily remove one or more of the bed rails and add a guardrail to turn it into a toddler bed.

A convertible crib is about the same size as a standard crib — around 28 inches wide by 52 inches long. The size doesn’t change when the crib is converted into a toddler or twin bed. Instead, the rails or sides can be moved or removed.

Switch from a crib to a toddler bed when your little one grows to 35 inches tall or starts trying to climb out of the crib on their own (even if they haven’t reached the height limit yet). At either of those points, it’s safe to switch to a toddler bed.

To switch it over, take out the mattress and unscrew one side of the crib. Make sure the mattress support is at its lowest level for safety, and attach the toddler rail. Place the mattress back on the frame (making sure it fits snugly with no gaps), put sheets on the bed, and you’re good to go.
