Gender Reveal Photo Ideas

Expecting mom and dad holding baby shoes

Whether your photo will be liked by hundreds on social media or proudly hung on your family’s and friends’ refrigerators, you want it to be great! With these ideas, you’re bound to find one you love.

1) Announce The New Sibling

If you’re expecting child number two (or three or four!), let big brother or sister tell the news by holding a sign announcing whether they’re waiting on a little brother or sister. This makes for a precious photo and gets your child involved in the process of expecting a new baby.

Growing your family is exciting, but it can be strange and confusing for a little one! You’ll need to prepare not only your home and heart but also your firstborn.

To get your child ready for the new addition, start teaching independence, describing what the new baby will be like, and reading age-appropriate yet informative books.

And, if it’s time for them to move into a big-kid bed, start making that transition as well. If your little one has been sleeping in one of our Convertible Cribs, simply convert it into a toddler bed, and you’re all set.

These timeless three-in-one convertible cribs made by dadada in Italy are crafted from soft, sustainable wood. With three different mattress heights and a toddler rail for easy conversion, this bed provides your baby with a place to sleep for years to come.

2) Spell It Out

Incorporate your love of words by spelling out your announcement with scrabble letters.

3) Use Baby Blocks

Another cute way to spell out your announcement? Colorful baby blocks.

4) Announce With A Book

If you love reading, use a book in your photo to give your family and friends a clue about the gender.

5) Write It Out

Grab a chalkboard to write out your baby news. If lettering isn’t your thing, ask a talented friend to make the announcement pop!

6) Make It Rain

Rain or shine, pose with a blue or pink umbrella (or parasol) to reveal the gender.

7) Make It Sparkle

Blow pink or blue glitter from your hands and snap the photo at just the right moment for a sparkly photo that will impress everyone!

8) Frame Your Ultrasound

Ultrasound image framed as one of many gender reveal ideas

Put your ultrasound to use by framing it in pink or blue and including it in your photo.

9) Photoshop Your Ultrasound

Get creative by photoshopping a gender clue (like a blue bowtie or pink bow) onto your ultrasound.

10) Have Fun With Chalk

Get your kids involved in the announcement by drawing on your driveway or sidewalk with chalk.

11) Put A Ribbon On It

Tie a ribbon or sash around your baby belly to show whether you’ve got a boy or girl growing inside.

Remember that pregnant bellies come in all shapes and sizes, and they’re all amazing. What you see on the outside doesn’t have much to do with your baby’s size or health. That said, if you have concerns, don’t hesitate to ask your doctor!

To learn more about what affects the appearance of your belly and what you can expect month by month, read our article here.

12) Crown Your Princess

If you’re expecting a girl, consider using a crown or tiara in your gender reveal photo.

13) Make It Sweet

Everyone loves chocolate! Color in the “she” or “he” on a Hershey’s bar for a sweet way to spread the news.

14) Use Fido Or Fluffy

Let your pet sport a blue or pink bandana for the family photo.

15) Introduce Your Baby

Announce your new baby’s gender and name at the same time with a name tag sticker on your belly. In no time, you’ll be able to introduce your little one in person!

16) Read All About It

Make your announcement breaking news by creating your own front-page newspaper to use as a prop in your photo.

Or the newspaper page itself can be the gender reveal. Include a photo of you and your partner or your ultrasound on the front page. You can even reveal your new baby’s name if you’re ready to share it with friends and family.

17) Capture Your Family’s Feet

If you live near the beach (or are a beach bum at heart!) write your announcement in the sand.

22) Wear Sports Clothes

Sports-loving families can share the news by wearing special jerseys or sports gear. When your baby arrives, you can keep the theme going by dressing them in a pint-sized jersey for the birth announcement.

23) Write It On A Baseball

Speaking of sports, use a marker to write your announcement on a baseball — or basketball, golf ball, or frisbee!

24) Paint It Pink (Or Blue)

Go all out with body paint for a messy but fun gender reveal photo!

Gender Reveal Surprise Ideas

Make the gender reveal a surprise for you, your partner, or the guests with one of these fun ideas!

1) Keep It Intimate

For a quiet evening in, reveal the baby’s gender to your partner with a candle that shows blue or pink as it burns down.

2) Outfit The Nursery

For a practical way to tell your partner whether it’s a boy or girl, buy something useful for the baby’s nursery in either blue or pink and wrap it as a gift.

Consider a nursery essential like Newton Baby’s breathable Crib Mattress, which comes in blue and pink and will give your baby the gift of comfortable and safe sleep for years to come!

This GREENGUARD Gold Certified mattress comes in two sizes — mini and standard — and is free of foam, glue, latex, and springs so your baby can enjoy cleaner, hypoallergenic sleep.

What does GREENGUARD Gold Certified mean? The Greenguard Environment Institute (GEI or GREENGUARD for short) is a non-profit organization that tests for chemical emissions in products and buildings.

The idea is to reduce pollutants in the environment, improve indoor air quality, and, of course, protect individuals like you and your sweet baby. There are two levels of GREENGUARD Certification: GREENGUARD Certified and GREENGUARD Gold Certified.

Gold is the highest level of certification, including criteria for even more chemicals and requiring lower total VOC emissions levels. This ensures that products are acceptable for use in environments like schools, nurseries, and healthcare facilities.

You’ll also rest easy knowing that our innovative Breathe-Thru Technology allows your baby to breathe right through the mattress, reducing the risk of suffocation. The right level of comfort, support, and air circulation means your baby will sleep better on a Newton.

We’re aiming for happy mornings — and no sweaty backs!

3) Break A Piñata

Piñatas never get old! Break the pink- or blue-stuffed piñata open in front of your guests. Have someone else fill the piñata if you want to be surprised as well.

If you love cake but want all your guests to be able to join in on the big moment, opt for pink- or blue-filled cake pops instead of one large cake. Three… two… one… bite!

7) Go Out To Eat

Find a restaurant that will join in on the fun and turn your gender reveal into a special evening out! Give your ultrasound results to your waiter and ask them to bring you a specialized dessert.

Your pregnancy has you in full-on nesting mode. Why not use personalized nesting dolls for your gender reveal?

Once you know what you’re expecting, keep up the nesting by gathering cute nursery essentials, like our Organic Cotton Sheets.

These organic muslin cotton sheets feature all-around elastic to provide a snug fit for any crib mattress. Choose from 10 different colors and patterns to match any nursery decor!

13) Fill A Box With Balloons

Fill a large box with pink or blue helium balloons (or both for twins!). When you’re ready for the reveal, open the box and watch the balloons fly!

14) Hang A Box Of Balloons

No helium balloons? No worries. Fill a box with the appropriate color of balloons, tie a string to the bottom for easy opening, and carefully hang the box from a tree.

Give the string a tug to let the balloons loose!

15) Hang A Box Of Confetti

For a fun twist on the above idea, fill the box with confetti instead of balloons.

16) Play Darts

See who’s got the best aim with a game of gender-reveal darts! Fill balloons with pink or blue paint, hang them up on a canvas (or something similar), and have at it.

Online Gender Reveal Ideas

 Online gender reveal ideas

There are many reasons that you might opt to have your gender reveal online. Whether it’s over Zoom with lots of friends and family or during a one-on-one video call with those closest to you, you have options! Your gender reveal will still be special and exciting.

1) Call Faraway Family And Friends

If you’re having an in-person gender reveal but want faraway family and friends to be part of the celebration, set up a video call during the party. You can designate a friend to handle the phone or computer during the big reveal, or you could carefully set your device on a bookshelf.

2) Press “Record”

If you want to relive the moment, record the video call. This will allow you to see your loved ones’ happy reactions to the news!

3) Use Social Media

Make use of social media for an online gender reveal by taking a poll, posting a photo, or running a live video. The options are endless.

4) Color Your Hair

With the option to turn off your video until you’re ready for the gender reveal, temporarily dye your hair if you dare! Color your hair to reveal the big news and watch the reactions when you turn your video on.

5) Use Music

Music is a fun and easy way to make an online gender reveal special. This could mean playing a song or even writing or singing your own song if you’re musical.

6) Send A Gift

For a one-on-one online gender reveal, send a gift to your loved one to announce the gender. Then have them open the gift when on a video call with you.

This can also work for a bigger online gender reveal party by mailing a small gift or letter to all of your guests ahead of time.

Tips For Throwing A Gender Reveal Party

  gender reveal cake ideas

With all of the gender reveal suggestions we mentioned above, you probably have a pretty good idea of how you want to do it. Regardless of how you’ll announce the news, if you’re going to gather your friends and family in person, here are a few tips for prepping and throwing the party.

Set The Date

In order to throw a gender reveal party, you’ll need to set the date for both the party and your ultrasound. This ultrasound will be during your second trimester and typically around the 18- or 20-week mark.

Once you know the date of your ultrasound, choose a date and time for the gender reveal. But keep in mind that if the baby doesn’t cooperate during the ultrasound and isn’t in the right position, the technician might not be able to tell you if it’s a boy or a girl.

That’s why it might be better not to schedule the party for right after the ultrasound.

One more note about ultrasound day. Before you go, you’ll need to decide who will be surprised at the party: you and your guests or only your guests. If you want the gender to be a surprise for you as well, ask the doctor to keep it a secret and write the gender on a piece of paper.

Send Invitations

Once you know the date, place, and time for the party, rally your loved ones by sending invitations. Whether you send electronic or paper invitations, include all the information your guests need to know.

It might even be helpful to include a short explanation of what a gender reveal party is or what you plan to do during the party.

Should you include your baby registry information on the invitations? Typically, the gender reveal party and baby showers are separate events, and the gifts are given during the baby showers.

That said, there are no rules for gender reveal parties! If you want to make it a two-in-one event, let your guests know, include your baby registry information, and be sure that you’ve registered for plenty of gender-neutral gifts.

Prep The Agenda

What will you do during the party? For the big moment, choose one of the gender reveal ideas we mentioned above. Otherwise, food, drinks, games, and simply hanging out are all options.

Remember that if your food is gender-themed, you’ll need to keep it hidden until after the reveal. Games can involve the gender reveal itself, or you can plan for an activity after everyone knows what you’re expecting.

For a pre-reveal game, have guests guess your favorite baby names, turn the reveal into a raffle, or show your ultrasound photo to see if guests can guess correctly.

The other thing that should definitely be on the agenda: enjoying yourself. Pregnancy is a special time, and learning more about your baby is exciting. Relax and make the most of the moment.
